Domino’s vowed to revamp their recipe from the ketchup reminiscent sauce to the lackluster toppings.
Now, I wouldn’t have known about any of this though if Domino’s hadn’t taken a real risk with a transparent advertising campaign, creating viral videos of actual Domino’s employees owning up to the fact that yes, everyone thinks their pizza is terrible.

This video, “The Pizza Turnaround”, shows the Domino’s team evaluating the market’s opinion of them, accepting that they had some work to do and then, doing it! Publicly embracing the fact that they were delivering bunk pies was a bold move but definitely one that evokes confidence from the consumers. Domino’s comes out of this looking devoted to quality and essentially, their customers.

“The strategy for the transparency and the campaign only worked because we were very confident that we had an absolutely perfect pizza,” – Patrick Doyle, Domino’s CEO

Here’s the real question though,
have they created the perfect pizza?

Well, their stocks have gone up- today they’re being traded at $11.74, nearly triple its 52 week low of $4.76 and has some heavy handed influencers enthusing it.

“Is that pizza or did an angel just give birth in my mouth?” – Steven Colbert

Whether Steven had to do this bit at the behest of his sponsors or if it was genuine is questionable but that doesn’t diminish the effect Steven Colbert has on a relatively large chunk of Domino’s market.

Some business marketing experts are debating that this is a horrible move on Domino’s part, isolating their previously loyal customers by basically telling them they have bad taste as well as potential customers by pointing out that they were knowingly selling horrible pizzas this whole time.

Overall, this campaign will be a win for Domino’s just on the curiosity it’s piquing.
Now, I’m just sitting waiting for lunch thinking, “Hm, I wonder if that new Domino’s recipe is any good?”

According to the survey, 40% of senior managers doubt that their leadership has a credible plan to address the economic crisis, while an even greater number—46%—are not sure that their leadership could carry out the plan, credible or not. Additionally, one-third of all CEO and CXO-level respondents do not have confidence in the plans that they presumably wrote themselves. Further, a remarkably high number of hard-hit companies—65%—are not doing enough to ensure their own survival, such as accelerating efforts to dispose of assets or secure external funding. Among companies that state they are financially strong, one-quarter are not taking advantage of opportunities to improve their position in the crisis.

While more than half (54%) of the managers expect their companies to emerge from the crisis stronger, the survey finds their optimism doesn’t square with their balance sheets; there is a disconnect between many companies’ financial/competitive position and strategic response. “Companies have focused on the near term, some at the expense of the long-term opportunities. The strong need to go long. They need to create a view of new industry structure,” said Bill Jackson, Booz & Company Senior Partner. “Many strong and stable companies are playing things too short-term oriented for the moment. The really struggling and failing companies have reacted dramatically and some have already moved into bankruptcy.”

With the the year coming to a close, there has been a flurry of settlements coming from the legal community.

This past week, Acacia Research Corporation announced that its Hospital Systems Corporation subsidiary resolved litigation with Philips Electronics North America Corporation pending before the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Texas.

The litigation related to a portfolio of patents that apply to medical picture archiving and communication system (PACS) technology.

Canadian infrastructure is in crisis. In a special five part series – Rebuilding Canada – Canwest News Service explored the critical infrastructure issues facing cities.  The series takes an in-depth look at the realities and the dollars behind Canada’s infrastructure crisis including:

• A study by economic forecasting firm Informetrica estimates that every one billion dollars invested in infrastructure would create the equivalent of 11,000 jobs, including 5,500 in the construction sector.
• The Canadian Federation of Municipalities estimates that our cities need $123 billion to bring essential public infrastructure up to acceptable levels; and another $115 billion to meet the needs of a growing population.
• Canada’s social infrastructure (pools, libraries, arts centres, community halls) is estimated to be in need of a $40.2 billion dollar boost to maintain and grow to meet the needs of an expanding population.
• The average Canadian produced more than 1,000 kilograms of garbage in 2006 and we’re running out of places to put it. A number of Canadian provinces have major projects in place to convert and compost that waste into renewable resources.
• Transit initiatives in six of Canada’s largest cities will transform the way commuters move between work and home. Toronto, Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Ottawa and Montreal all have billion dollar projects planned.

If you are like me and believe that proper organization is a prerequisite to success, then you will be happy to hear that the State of New Jersey may be establishing a court segment focused specifically on business cases.  A Bill was introduced on December 10th that would make this possible.

This business court would cover the following types of cases:

• The Uniform Commercial Code
• Banking
• Insurance
• Commodities
• Securities
• Corporations
• Non-profits
• Partnerships
• Limited liability entities
• Trusts
• Competition among businesses
• Reorganizations
• Dispositions of businesses
• Business combinations
• Shareholder, partner and member disputes
• Intellectual property matters
• Non-competes
• Employment agreements

Considering that this court would have judges knowledgeable regarding all forms of corporate disputes, this could prove to be a successful model for the rest of the country to follow.  New Jersey already has a court designated for tax law, setting up a Business Court was the next logical step for the legislature to establish.  From all reports this bill should pass with little resistance.
